Bagatellen, at one point one of our favorite review / news sites on all of this weird music, is over.

It’s been a fun ride. Effective immediately, bagatellen is permanently closing shop. What started as a joint music blog in early 2003 quickly grew into a community, so it’s saddening to have to put it to rest. Looking back over the archives in recent months, it’s been amazing to consider the wealth of content and information in these pages. Nobody’s crazy about the idea of letting it bleed out, so Derek and I have decided to maintain the pages at this address until, well, for a long time.

Firehouse 12 To Present The Daniel Levin Trio December 18th

On Friday, December 18th, Firehouse 12’s fifth anniversary Fall Jazz Series will conclude with a two-set performance by the Daniel Levin Trio. Led by cellist/composer Daniel Levin, a veteran of the New Haven music scene making his sixth appearance at Firehouse 12, the two year-old group features Norwegian bassist Ingebrigt Håker Flaten and Chicago-based drummer Frank Rosaly, who replaced Gerald Cleaver following the band’s 2008 debut recording, Fuhuffah (Clean Feed). This performance, which will be recorded for possible future release, will be the fourth and final event in the band’s December tour.

John Hollenbeck Profiled

It’s hard to pin down the drummer-composer John Hollenbeck stylistically. You can frequently find him playing gigs as a sideman at clubs like the Village Vanguard and the Jazz Standard. This would suggest rather strongly that Mr. Hollenbeck is a jazz musician.

But is he?

“Uh, I can play jazz,” Mr. Hollenbeck said cagily. “I know a lot about jazz.”

He then proceeded to give a definition of jazz that was so expansive that it bordered on meaninglessness.

Ellery Eskelin (born 1959) was raised in Baltimore and began playing the tenor saxophone at age ten, inspired by his mother “Bobbie Lee” who played Hammond B3 organ professionally in the early sixties. In 1983 Eskelin moved to New York City and in 1987 began recording with the cooperative group Joint Venture which also began his exposure on the European international touring circuit.

A crucial figure in the development of Free Jazz, trumpeter Bill Dixon (b. 1925) was first associated with the ensembles of Cecil Taylor and Archie Shepp, and was one of the main architects of the Jazz Composers Guild. In 1964, he organized the October Revolution in Jazz – The New Thing’s equivalent to the Armory Show – introducing Free Jazz to a broader audience. In the late 60s he devoted himself to teaching, creating the Black Music Division at Bennington College, VT in 1973.

All-Star quintet: Joey Baron, Robert Black, Larry Polansky, Robyn Schulkowsky, Christian Wolff present the music of Christian Wolff both old and new – including the premiere of new long form piece written specifically for this quintet.

Christian Wolff was born in 1934 in Nice, France. He’s lived mostly in the U.S. since 1941. He studied piano with Grete Sultan and composition, briefly, with John Cage. Though mostly self-taught as a composer, the work of John Cage, Morton Feldman, David Tudor and Earle Brown have been important to him, as well as long associations with Cornelius Cardew and Frederic Rzewski. A particular feature of his music is the various freedoms it allows performers at the time of performance as well as the variable results possible for any one particular piece, for which various new notations have been invented. Underlying notions in the work are shared freedom, self-determination and democratically-spirited collaboration. The music is published by C.F. Peters, New York and much of it is recorded, on many labels. A number of pieces, starting in 1953, have been used and commissioned by Merce Cunningham and his dance company. Wolff has been active as a performer and as improvisor – with Takehisa Kosugi, Steve Lacey, Christian Marclay, Keith Rowe, William Winant, the group AMM, Kui Dong and Larry Polansky. His writings on music (up to 1998) are collected in “Cues: Writings and Conversations”, published by MusikTexte, Cologne. He has received awards and grants from the American Academy and National Institute of Arts and Letters, the Ford Foundation, DAAD Berlin, the Asian Cultural Council, the Fromm Foundation, the Foundation for Contemporary Performance Arts (the John Cage Award for music) and the Mellon Foundation. He is a member of the Akademie der Kuenste in Berlin and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. In 2004 he received an honorary Doctor of Arts degree from the California Institute of the Arts. Academically trained as a classicist, Wolff was professor of classics and music at Dartmouth College from 1971 to 1999.

Avant-garde jazz drummer Joey Baron has worked with an impressive list of musicians, including everyone from Bill Frisell, Stan Getz, and Tony Bennett to John Zorn, Laurie Anderson, Fred Frith, and Tim Berne. His own groups he has led include the “Down Home Group”, Barondown, and Killer Joey and was a member of “Naked City” (with John Zorn, Bill Frisell, Fred Frith and Wayne Horvitz) and of Zorn’s group Masada (Dave Douglas and Greg Cohen). Joey Baron was born 1955 in Richmond ,Va. He started drumming at age 9, performing profesionally the following year. His early musical education included private drum lessons as well as the wide genre radio programing of the 1960s. After finishing high school early through a special accelerated program, Mr. Baron spent time in Boston attending the Berklee School of Music.He settled in Los Angeles,California in 1975 to realize a dream of playing with the great jazz musician Carmen McRae,consequently becoming a much sought after singer’s drummer. Since moving to New York City in 1983, Mr. Baron has continued to expand his scope and develope his musical ideas through collaborations with various artists including Red Rodney, Bill Frisell, Tim Berne, Ron Carter, and John Zorn ,with whom the collaboration continues to the present. Current projects include solo concert tours, duo concerts with Lee Konitz, Bill Frisell, his own band, “Killer Joey”,The John Abercrombie Quartet, and the Schulkowsky, Studer, Baron drum trio.

Crank Sturgeon make a very haphazard, dada & often derange noisy mixture of: discordant guitar abuse & strum, manic vocal collages, coarse & jarring tape edits, all manner of clutter muffle & scuttle, jabbering & unstable noise matter, and generally unhinged yet often enjoyable sonic mayhem.

Karst – The Blood Moon Lands
Karst is George Proctor’s (Mutant Ape & Murder Book) more drone based & less noisey project. The Blood Moon Lands is the projects 8th release & it finds Mr Proctor building a rewarding long track of looping, growing & almost stuck industrial gone to sludgy tone that really drills into you in a hypnotic manner.

Rempis/Rosaly Duo on Tour

Dave Rempis and Frank Rosaly, two of the most active players in Chicago’s world-renowned scene of jazz and improvised music, have finalized the schedule for their twelve-concert North American tour in late fall of 2009, coinciding with the release of their first duo cd, “Cyrillic,” on the 482 Music label. With Rempis on saxophones (Vandermark Five, Rempis Percussion Quartet, The Engines) and Rosaly on percussion (Fast Citizens, Rolldown, Mandarin Movie,) this duo is a formidable presence, spanning a wealth of musical possibilities in their free-improvised outings.
