MEMORIAL TRIBUTE TO RASHIED ALI (Saturday) This salute to the formidable drummer Rashied Ali, who died last month, will feature a group led by one of his many disciples, Gregg Bendian. The focus will be on the late-period John Coltrane music that Mr. Ali helped define; the ensemble will also include Jon Irabagon on saxophones, Zach Brock on violin and Peter Brendler on bass. At 7 p.m., Le Poisson Rouge, 158 Bleecker Street, near Thompson Street, Greenwich Village , (212) 505-3474, lepoissonrouge.com. (Chinen)20090903
JAMES MOODY QUARTET ? PAUL MOTIAN, JOE LOVANO, BILL FRISELL 33619 ? JAMES MOODY QUARTET (Friday through Sunday) The saxophonist and bebop legend James Moody has a solid new album, “4A” (IPO), that confirms the continuing shine of his charisma. He’ll probably play some of the same standards here, with a supportive working band that includes Renee Rosnes on piano, Todd Coolman on bass and Adam Nussbaum on drums. At 8:30 and 10:30 p.m., Iridium, 1650 Broadway, at 51st Street, (212) 582-2121, iridiumjazzclub.com; cover, $35, with a $10 minimum. (Chinen)
PAUL MOTIAN, JOE LOVANO, BILL FRISELL (Friday through Sunday) Mr. Motian, a drummer and composer, sets a tone for this blue-chip trio that’s shadowy, slippery and as open-ended as a koan; his longtime partners are Mr. Lovano, on tenor and soprano saxophones, and Mr. Frisell, on guitar. They have memorably recorded at the Village Vanguard, and each of their returns feels like a generous occurrence. At 9 and 11 p.m., Village Vanguard, 178 Seventh Avenue South, at 11th Street, West Village, (212) 255-4037, villagevanguard.com; cover, $35. THE OVERTONE QUARTET (Tuesday through Thursday) The bassist Dave Holland, celebrated for the rugged invention of his small groups, takes more of a back seat in this all-star collective. His partners should have no problem asserting themselves: along with Chris Potter, the longtime saxophonist in Mr. Holland’s quintet, they are the drummer Eric Harland and the pianist Jason Moran. (Through Sept. 13.) At 8 and 10:30 p.m., Blue Note, 131 West Third Street, Greenwich Village , (212) 475-8592, bluenote.net; $35 cover at tables; $20 at the bar, with a $5 minimum. (Chinen)20090903
STOCHASTIC BROOKLYN (Wednesday) In the first set of this experimental series, at 7 p.m., the trombonist Michael Dessen leads a trio with Chris Tordini on bass and Dan Weiss on drums. The second set, at 8:30, will feature the Nilsson Brothers — Anders, a guitarist, and Peter, a drummer — joined by the bassist Dave Ambrosio. At 8 p.m., Barbès, 376 Ninth Street, at Sixth Avenue, Park Slope, Brooklyn , (718) 965-9177, barbesbrooklyn.com; cover, $10 per set. (Chinen)20090903
JOHN SURMAN QUARTET (Friday and Saturday) The baritone and soprano saxophonist John Surman has long been a leading figure in British jazz and improvised-music circles, and he doesn’t surface here nearly often enough. He’s celebrating the release of “Brewster’s Rooster” (ECM) with that album’s sterling cast: the guitarist John Abercrombie, the drummer Jack DeJohnette and the bassist Drew Gress. At 8:30 and 11 p.m., Birdland, 315 West 44th Street, Clinton , (212) 581-3080, birdlandjazz.com; $30, general seating; $40, premium seating. (Chinen)
