Jazz Listings From the New York Times

From NYTimes.com:

DAVE BALLOU, BEN GERSTEIN, JAMES ILGENFRITZ, HARRIS EISENSTADT (Tuesday) This improvising collective is made up of intrepid and texture-minded players: Mr. Ballou, a trumpeter; Mr. Gerstein, a trombonist and keyboardist; Mr. Ilgenfritz, a bassist; and Mr. Eisenstadt, a drummer. At 8:30 p.m., Le Grand Dakar, 285 Grand Avenue, between Clifton Place and Lafayette Avenue, Clinton Hill, Brooklyn , (718) 398-8900, granddakar.com; free. (Chinen)20090813

BASSDRUMBONE (Thursday) Nearly 30 years ago the bassist Mark Helias, the drummer Gerry Hemingway and the trombonist Ray Anderson first began knocking about together as BassDrumBone. A few years ago they released a taut update, “The Line Up” (Clean Feed), that affirmed the haleness of their rapport. Here the group plays an early set; Peripatetics, a duo consisting of the guitarist Liberty Ellman and the pianist Vijay Iyer, follows them at 10. At 8 p.m., the Stone, Avenue C and Second Street, East Village , thestonenyc.com; $10. (Chinen)20090813

JEFF DAVIS MAXIMALIST QUINTET (Thursday) Jeff Davis is a versatile and texture-aware drummer who doesn’t usually call up a maximalist ideal. But that’s his aim, at least nominally, for this adventurous group, with Kirk Knuffke on trumpet, Tony Barba on reeds, Jonathan Goldberger on guitar and Aryeh Kobrinsky on bass. At 9 and 10:30 p.m., Tea Lounge, 837 Union Street, near Sixth Avenue, Park Slope, Brooklyn , (718) 789-2762, tealoungeny.com; suggested donation, $5. (Chinen)20090813

? FIELDWORK (Wednesday) On its potent recent album, “Door” (Pi), this trio throws down a characteristic gauntlet of jagged melodies and asymmetrical forms. The heart of the group’s sound is an ever-shifting rapport between the pianist Vijay Iyer, the saxophonist Steve Lehman and the drummer Tyshawn Sorey. At 8 and 10 p.m., the Stone, Avenue C and Second Street, East Village , thestonenyc.com; $10. (Chinen)20090813

PETE ROBBINS AND SILENT Z (Saturday) Mr. Robbins, an alto saxophonist, leads Silent Z, a willfully progressive outfit with Jesse Neuman on cornet and electronic effects, Mike Gamble on guitar, Thomas Morgan on bass and Tommy Crane on drums. At 8 p.m., the Stone, Avenue C and Second Street, East Village , thestonenyc.com; $10. (Chinen)

Bagatellen Reviews

From Bagatellen:

Tomas Korber/ Phil Julian — Herbe Zeiten
Here’s a duo we should all be interested to hear — two musicians I’d suppose have to be pretty amiable, given the number and variety of collaborations with others, in recent years. Phil Julian’s among the more active musicians in Britain 2.0’s steadily growing pool of thoughtful players — and he’s been active for [...]

Gato Barbieri – In Search of the Mystery
ESP-Disk’ has long been a haven for the under-recognized in left field music, documenting valuable works by artists as diverse as saxophonist Marzette Watts and psych priestess Erica Pomerance. In a few cases, artists who released their debuts on ESP went on to some degree of commercial success, usually well-removed from their initial [...]

Two On Nonvisualobjects
An analogue synthesizer (Yamaha CS-40M) and field recordings are the lone origins for this new outing by Heribert Friedl, who in Recherche_00 continues to intensify his interest in exploiting the inherent qualities of a single instrument, as he did with the cimbalom (or “hackbrett”) in Trac[k]_T (also on Nonvisualobjects). The composer refers [...]

Sonomu Reviews

From Sonomu:

Various Artists, Echoes of Polyhymnia (Hypnos)
Hypnos now boasts a long history and impressive discography of highly-accomplished ambient music hovering in dark, but not lightless, regions, several of which are compilations of exclusive tracks. Recently it added to this bounty with two anthologies released more or less simultaneously. … [read]

Coppice Halifax, Ocean Lion (CDR Milieu Music)
In some baffling way, Ocean Lion has a dual effect on body and mind. It lulls the body into sweet submission with captivating, textured beats, while simultaneously engaging the mind with a background sky awash in brand-new pastel colours, ones you can´t find in your box of crayons. I flash back… [read]

Raz Mesinai´s Badawi, Unit of Resistance (ROIR)
Unit of Resistance is one component of a project Raz Mesinai takes very seriously – the demonization of Islam by the Bush administration, which first manifested itself in Mesinai´s protest action against the Republican National Convention in New York City in 2004. Mesinai is ably qualified to… [read]

Evan Parker at Ronnie Scott’s, London

This recent performance is reviewed.

The last time saxophonist and doyen of free jazz Evan Parker played unfettered at Ronnie Scott’s was as an experimental Young Turk taking advantage of the late club owner’s largesse. Parker recalled that Scott allowed youngsters to use the “old place” rent-free after relocating to the current premises in 1965.

Since then, Parker’s commitment to free improvisation and technical excellence has been documented on more than 200 recordings and has won international plaudits, but his only appearance in the Ronnie Scott’s mainstream was as a sideman with Charlie Watts, The Rolling Stones’ drummer. Perhaps such iconoclastic experimentalism was deemed out of place in supper-club surroundings. Even at this concert – part of Ronnie Scott’s Brit Jazz Fest – Parker captured a slight pre-gig frisson by ending his reminiscence with “…and I’d love to see you still here when I open my eyes”.
