Out today on Aum Fidelity:
Joe Morris: bass
Petr Cancura: tenor and alto saxophone
Luther Gray: drumsWildlife is the debut recording of a new group concept from Jazz Master nonpareil Joe Morris. Within this trio anything is possible. Joe Morris is here featured on bass. Petr Cancura, a remarkably gifted young musician (featured here on tenor and alto sax, and as recording engineer!), is a Czech Republic native who now resides in Brooklyn (by way of Ottawa, then Boston). Petr’s name was new to us at AUM Fidelity when Joe first spoke of his great musical gifts, which are on gorgeous display here. Drummer Luther Gray developed from kicking it in punk rock bands in Washington DC in the late 80s to being a jazz drummer of great finesse and technique in the modern day. He has been working with Joe Morris since 2002.

From the Los Angeles New Music Ensemble:
This summer the Los Angeles New Music Ensemble is proud to present a summer series based on time, minimalism, and electronics. The program is centered around Terry Riley’s masterpiece of the minimalist movement, In C. In C has been lauded throughout the world as a seminal work in the history of contemporary music. Yet more importantly, the truly transcendent nature of the piece when heard live is something that we believe should be experienced by everyone. When played with skill, precision, and passion, Terry Riley’s visionary set of 53 musical cues becomes a transformative performance, and it is these attributes that we intend to bring to Southern California this summer.
We are also pleased to present two pieces especially commissioned for this series by Patrick Conlon and Dan Formidoni, and two older works by Evan Ziporyn and Dr. Marvin Lamb.

David Darling focuses on promoting local artists in Connecticut.
As artists, we often have difficulty finding professional work where we live. CICP members work and perform internationally. We have made a conscious decision to make our home here in Connecticut, thereby enriching the cultural lives of our communities and positively impacting the revenues of our state. One might think of CICP as a cultural parallel to the local food movement: cultural localvorism. Presenters and audiences often evidence a bias towards importing their cultural diet: ‘it has to be better if it is from far away.’ CICP aims to change that pattern, working with presenters, funding partners and audiences to develop productive linked pathways to local and regional production and consumption of the arts.

Experimental noise group Wolf Eyes has their latest effort reviewed.
“Cellar” starts the album out by shedding the processed vocals that were integral to earlier Wolf Eyes releases in favor of a snotty, almost punk sounding snarl before letting the electronic waste and reeds tear everything asunder. This is Wolf Eyes in an even more ferocious mode than anything from Human Animal. At the other end of the album, the group creates a new kind of drift for themselves by incorporating a droning harmonica on “Droll/Cut The Dog” that wouldn’t sound out of place in an Ennio Morricone soundtrack except for the sinister ramblings that blanket the composition.
