Mary Halvorson Trio at Roulette February 13th

From Improvised Communications:

On Friday, February 13th at 8:30 p.m., Brooklyn-based guitarist/composer Mary Halvorson and her trio will perform at Roulette in New York.

The group, which also features bassist John Hebert and drummer Ches Smith, will be premiering brand new music in addition to performing selections from its acclaimed 2008 debut, Dragon’s Head (Firehouse 12 Records).

The record, Ms. Halvorson’s first at the helm of her own ensemble, is featured on best-of-the-year lists in a long list of publications, including AllAboutJazz-New York, JazzTimes, the New York Times, The Wire and the Village Voice.

The success of Dragon’s Head led critics to call Ms. Halvorson “probably the most original jazz guitarist to emerge this decade” (Peter Margasak, Chicago Reader) and “the freshest, busiest, most critically acclaimed guitar-slinger out of downtown Manhattan/Brooklyn right now” (Howard Mandel, Jazz Beyond Jazz).

Swarm/Knives

“To create a space between events that is charged. To call, connecting across space and invigorating an atmosphere. To confuse space as time for making a music. To utilize an erotics of distance.

Flocking is horizontal and occurs at irregular intervals, forming clusters. Flocking is a form of continuity which links discrete sonic events into strands. Tumbling is vertical, a relationship between two or more strands. Tumble is the perceptual grouping of sequential sounds into causal relationships. Tumbling could be heard as a “meta-flocking” across layers of the music. These structures arise through accidental correspondence, emphasized purposefully.”

Seth Nehil is a multimedia artist living in Portland, OR. He has composed sound for CD, multi-speaker installations, solo and large-scale concerts, dance, theater and performance. Musique Machine Reviews

From Musique Machine:

Cunnan – Foxfire and Aconite
This extremely limited cd-r of thirty copies is an art edition release with hand painted wrap around sleeves and a vellum bi-fold with lyrics and recording information. The album was originally released as a download only edition by the alternative folk Website Woven Wheat Whispers, which sadly shut down last summer. This cd-r was actually released in 2006, according to Cryptantus Records’ Myspace page. Cunnan are Alan Trench, Christopher Patinios and Stephen Robinson of Temple Music with Tracy Jeffery of Orchis on vocals and Julie Brackenbury on violin. Alan Trench is a multi-instrumentalist also notable for his work with Martyn Bates, and also known as the man behind World Serpent Distribution, which also shut down a few years back. He’s credited here with Lute, Guitars, Keyboards, Samplers, Synthesizers, percussion, whistles, dulcimer, tenor recorder and, among other things, shadows(?).

Emit – Abortions
Emit bend, melt and pummel Black metal music and spirit into a very strange, sinisterly psychedelic and bizarre place. This wonderful yet un-nevering and varied disk is a highly consistent and strange collection of tracks from through out the projects 9 year descent into darkness and sonic madness.

Expo ’70- Be Invisble Now! – Self Titled
This two way split brings together two tracks a piece of hypnotic tinged Krautrock from Expo 70 who come from the USA & Be Invisible Now! from Italy. And for a split release surprisingly this(for most the part) flows rather well as a glorious tripped out whole

From Detroit’s Bohemian National Home:

Friday Jan 23rd at 2739 Edwin Gallery: Han Bennink and Mary Oliver! plus Traum (hall/buetow/riggs)
Han Bennink returns to one of his favorite cities with his partner and Instant Composers Pool collaborator Mary Oliver on violin and viola. Two of the outstanding musicians of our time, Han and Mary can careen from swinging chamber jazz to the furthest reaches of free improv.

Han first came to notice as the young Dutch drummer of choice for Dexter Gordon, Sonny Rollins and Eric Dolphy. Since the early 60′s, he has been a leading figure of the European avant garde, forming ICP with pianist Misha Mengelberg and performing with Peter Brotzmann, Fred Van Hove and Alexander von Schlippenbach. Over the last several decades, his amazing virtuosity has graced work by Don Cherry, Lee Konitz, Derek Bailey and Eugene Chadbourne.

Mary Oliver is a California native who attend Mills College. In addition to working with ICP and improvising greats like Evan Parker, George Lewis and Phil Minton, Mary has an impressive Classical/New Music career that has seen her debut works by Morton Feldman, John Cage and Iannis Xenakis.

Opening the night will be a set from chamber improvisers Traum: Ben Hall, Hans Buetow and Chris Riggs Come see these great musicians in one of the friendliest places in town. Loft music in Hamtramck!
