New Lionel Marchetti on Crouton Music

Crouton Music has announced a new release.

Years in the making, RED DUST is a three disc boxed set of new work from this master practitioner of musique concrete. Elaborate in its aural presentation, this study reveals Marchetti’s most focused and exciting work to date. Produced in part with Yôko Higashi, the material reveals sounds old and new, acting as a modern looking glass into a tapestry of ideas still grappled with today; human attraction, narcissism, and the function of the artist. The music flows story-like over the course of the three discs; a novel-esque concept/approach to a triptych visual presentation. The combination of ridiculously old recordings melting into obviously modern sounds makes this listening an experience to ponder on many levels.

Site News

Just a few quick notes.

The subsmissions queue is very long right now. I apologize for the time it is taking to get through it all, but I will have a little more time over the next few days to post the articles.

I’ve installed a feature on the site that should, over time, add more links automatically to articles. Since it is automatic, it might not be 100 percent perfect, so I am taking it slow.

The site has been abyssmally slow at certain times of the day lately, usually around noon US central time. I’m not sure of the cause yet, but I am trying to get some answers out of the hosting company. Please sit tight and if pages are taking more than 10 seconds to load or if you get errors, just try back a few minutes later. In the mean time, I have reduced the number of articles per page in order to reduce the load on the system.

Last week we set another traffic record in terms of hits and unique visitors. Thanks for keeping us growing.

An Die Musik Live in February

An Die Musik Live in Baltimore is featuring a number of shows in February.

The Winter Jazz Programme officially begins next week with two concerts celebrating Black History Month.

THURSDAY 2 FEB @ 8PM & 9.30PM
ETHNIC HERITAGE ENSEMBLE
Kahil El’Zabar – percussion, thumb piano, voice
Ernest Khabeer Dawkins – reeds, percussion
Corey Wilkes – trumpet ,percussion
$18/$15 seniors and students
Performing together for over 25 years, the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble was founded by El’Zabar and tenor saxophonist Edward Wilkerson, Jr., who sought to fuse contemporary Afro-American musics with more traditional African instrumentation and rhythms. Now featuring Corey Wilkes, the amazing young trumpeter who has been wowing audiences and critics around the world, and Ernest Dawkins, founder of the New Horizons Ensemble, the trio’s “harmonically provocative and rhythmically seductive” (Chicago Tribune) compositions impart an ancestral wisdom that conjures an energy rarely encountered in contemporary music.

SATURDAY 2 FEB @ 8PM & 9.30PM
LEROY JENKINS (violin) & MYRA MELFORD (piano)
$20/$18 seniors and students

Leroy Jenkins founded the late-60s Creative Construction Company (with Braxton, Smith and Steve McCall). In 1970 they would give New York City the first taste of the new music that these Chicago AACM musicians were developing. Jenkins has performed with Archie Shepp, Albert Ayler, and Alice Coltrane, but it was his work with the Revolutionary Enemble (co-founded with bassist Sirone and drummer Jerome Cooper) that gained Jenkins prominence as the most significant violinist of the modern era. For this performance he is joined by the innovative and thoughtful pianist Myra Melford, who has collaborated with Han Bennink, Dave Douglas and Joseph Jarman.

482 Music to Release Mike Reed CD

A new release coming from 482 Music.

482 MUSIC TO RELEASE NEW CD OF MIKE REED DUETS MARCH 14TH AVON, CT — Drummer Mike Reed joins forces with three fellow mainstays of the Chicago improvised music scene, Jim Baker (ARP synthesizer), Nicole Mitchell (flute) and Jeff Parker (guitar), for his first release under his own name, In The Context Of (482-1047), coming March 14th on 482 Music. This collection of eight improvised duets finds Reed performing with Parker on two tracks and Baker and Mitchell on three tracks each. Reed has worked extensively with all three players around Chicago in a variety of improvised configurations as well as in long-standing groups such as The David Boykin Expanse.

“In the fall of 2003 I was asked if I had any interest in making a solo drum recording,” writes Reed in the liner notes. “Although a flattering idea, I declined. The nature of any music that I have participated in has been that of a relationship and dialogue with other musicians. My ideas and ideals as a musician, no matter how out front or supportive, have always stemmed from performing In The Context Of an ensemble. Presented here is the barest display of that context, a series of duets with some of my favorite musicians. I’m truly blessed to have the opportunity to listen and interact with these unique people on and off the stage.”

Reed has been an active member of the vibrant Chicago jazz and improvised music community since 1997, working prolifically as both a drummer and an organizer/presenter of live music. He has performed regularly with Axel Doerner, Josh Abrams, and Tobias Delius among many others and is currently a member of The David Boykin Expanse, Rob Mazurek’s Exploding Star Orchestra and the Josh Berman Quartet. As a leader, he has released two recordings with his cross-genre group The Treehouse Project, including 2002′s three-disc set The Picture Show (482 Music), and his quintet, Loose Assembly, expects to release its debut later this year. Reed is also the founder of the Emerging Artists Organization, considered one of the finest not-for-profit improvised music series in the Midwest, and his work as the lead organizer of July 2005′s Intonation Music Festival, in coordination with Pitchfork Media, led the Chicago Tribune to call him one of the Chicagoans of the Year.
